Hillary Clinton Says Biden’s Reelection Bid Was a Major Misstep

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has openly criticized former President Joe Biden’s decision to run for another term in 2024, describing it as a major misstep that she believes hurt both his political legacy and the Democratic Party’s chances in the election.

Speaking at a recent event in New York, Clinton reflected on Biden’s reelection campaign and argued that his choice to remain in the race came with significant consequences. She suggested that stepping aside earlier could have created an opportunity for a new generation of Democratic leaders to emerge and compete for the party’s nomination.

According to Clinton, Biden had previously positioned himself as a transitional leader who would help guide the country toward fresh leadership. She believes that if he had announced sooner that he would not seek a second term, Democrats could have held a competitive primary election and given voters a broader range of candidates to consider.

“He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country,” Clinton said during the discussion, according to People magazine.

Biden remained the Democratic candidate until July 2024. However, growing concerns about his campaign intensified after a widely scrutinized debate performance against Donald Trump. Facing mounting pressure from within his party, Biden eventually ended his reelection bid.

Vice President Kamala Harris later became the Democratic nominee, but she was unable to secure victory in the November election, losing to Trump.

Clinton argued that an earlier decision by Biden to step aside would have given Democrats more time to organize a full primary contest and build momentum behind a new candidate. She suggested that a nominee emerging from a competitive race might have been in a stronger position to challenge Trump in the general election.

Her remarks add to the ongoing debate within Democratic circles about the party’s strategy during the 2024 campaign and whether a different approach could have produced a different outcome.
