A young woman from Wales who was told she had just months to live has tragically died only weeks after receiving the devastating prognosis, leaving her family and identical twin sister mourning an unimaginable loss.
Caitlin Leggett, 24, of Cardiff, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of blood cancer earlier this year. Despite undergoing intensive treatment and exploring every possible option, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away just one month after doctors warned that her illness was terminal.
A Devastating Diagnosis
In April 2025, Caitlin was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a fast-growing cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.
She initially responded well to chemotherapy and entered remission before receiving a stem cell transplant in the hope of achieving a long-term recovery.
Sadly, the cancer returned only weeks later.
Doctors informed Caitlin and her family that the available treatments in the United Kingdom were unlikely to cure the disease. Determined not to give up, her loved ones launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the cost of experimental treatment overseas, believing it represented her best chance for survival.
A Twin Sister Fighting Alongside Her
Throughout Caitlin’s illness, her twin sister, Grace, remained by her side.
The sisters shared an exceptionally close bond that extended far beyond family. They were best friends, celebrated every birthday together, and even lived together while attending university.

In an emotional appeal posted on GoFundMe, Grace wrote that they had recently celebrated their 24th birthday and explained that, without urgent medical treatment abroad, it could be Caitlin’s last.
She described the overseas therapy as her sister’s only remaining hope.
A Surprising Discovery During Treatment
As doctors evaluated Grace as a possible stem cell donor, the family received unexpected news.
For their entire lives, they had believed the sisters were fraternal twins because they had developed in separate amniotic sacs before birth.
Medical testing revealed something completely unexpected.
Despite that early assumption, Caitlin and Grace were actually identical twins, sharing the same genetic profile.
While the discovery was remarkable, it also brought heartbreaking consequences.
Because their DNA was nearly identical, Grace was unable to donate her stem cells, eliminating what many had hoped would be a potentially life-saving treatment option.
Reflecting on the situation, Grace said it was difficult to comprehend facing life without her twin.
“We’re only 24,” she said. “Nobody expects something like this to happen.”
Caitlin shared similar emotions, saying she couldn’t imagine their lifelong journey ending so soon after everything they had experienced together.
Family’s Hope Ends in Heartbreak
On June 16, Grace shared the devastating update that Caitlin had died peacefully the previous day.
According to her message on the family’s fundraising page, Caitlin suffered a sudden brain bleed that was followed by multiple strokes, causing her condition to worsen dramatically in a very short period.
Surrounded by her loved ones, she passed away peacefully after an incredibly courageous fight against cancer.

Grace thanked everyone who had supported the family throughout Caitlin’s illness, expressing gratitude for the kindness, encouragement, and generosity they had received during such an overwhelming time.
Remembering Caitlin
Caitlin’s story touched thousands of people, not only because of her determination to keep fighting but also because of the extraordinary relationship she shared with her twin sister.
Their journey highlighted both the emotional strength of their bond and the heartbreaking reality that even an identical twin could not provide the stem cell donation everyone had hoped might save her life.
Although her life was tragically cut short, Caitlin is remembered for her courage, resilience, and the love she shared with her family and friends throughout her battle with leukemia.
Our deepest condolences go out to Grace, their family, and everyone who knew and loved Caitlin during this incredibly difficult time.
