21-Year-Old Rope Jumper’s Last Request Takes on a Heartbreaking New Meaning Following Fatal Accident

A 21-year-old Brazilian woman who tragically lost her life during a rope-jumping experience had made one final request before taking the leap—a request that has taken on heartbreaking significance in the wake of the accident.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas arrived at an abandoned bridge in Limeira, located in Brazil’s São Paulo state, on June 14, expecting an exciting day filled with adventure. The young woman, who aspired to become a physical education teacher, was participating in a rope-jumping event at Ponte do Esqueleto, commonly known as Skeleton Bridge.

Before the jump, Freitas reportedly asked the instructors if she could perform a Superman-style launch. She wanted to begin the jump with her arms stretched out as the instructors carried her on their shoulders and released her dramatically from the bridge.

Her request was approved.

What was meant to be a thrilling moment, however, quickly turned into a devastating tragedy.

Investigators say Freitas was released from the bridge without being secured to the safety ropes that were supposed to protect her. She fell approximately 130 feet to the ground below.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, the 21-year-old could not be saved.

The incident has sparked widespread shock and anger across Brazil, especially after video footage of the jump began circulating online. The footage reportedly shows two instructors carrying Freitas toward the edge of the bridge and releasing her. Moments later, a witness can allegedly be heard screaming that the safety rope was missing.

Police investigator Andrea Levy said the three instructors involved in the activity admitted that Freitas had not been connected to the required safety equipment. According to Levy, the instructors have been unable to explain how such a critical oversight occurred.

“They cannot remember whether they forgot to attach the ropes, who was responsible for doing it, or who failed to perform the safety check. The fact remains that she was not connected to the ropes,” Levy told reporters.

The three instructors have since been arrested and may face manslaughter charges as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

The tragedy has also drawn attention to the sport of rope jumping, which differs from traditional bungee jumping. Unlike bungee jumping, which uses elastic cords that create a bouncing effect, rope jumping relies on low-stretch climbing ropes that turn the descent into a swinging, pendulum-like motion.

As investigators continue their work, friends and loved ones are mourning the loss of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, remembering a young woman with dreams for the future whose final adventure ended in an unimaginable tragedy.
