The controversy surrounding the recently renovated Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., has taken another unexpected turn after President Donald Trump announced that several individuals have been arrested in connection with what he described as acts of vandalism.
The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny over the $14 million restoration project, which has faced criticism following reports of algae growth, peeling paint, and questions about the renovation process itself.
Trump Claims Vandalism Led to Damage
In a series of posts shared on Truth Social over the weekend, Trump revealed that law enforcement officers had detained multiple people accused of damaging the iconic Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial.
“The United States Park Police have arrested multiple individuals for vandalizing our Nation’s magnificent Reflecting Pool,” Trump wrote.
He went on to describe the alleged actions as serious offenses involving damage to national landmarks and suggested that those responsible could face significant legal consequences.
The president also confirmed that the pool would need to be drained so repairs could be carried out.
Olympic Athlete Among Those Arrested
One of the individuals reportedly arrested was 67-year-old David Hearn, a former Olympic canoe competitor who represented the United States in three Olympic Games.
According to Hearn, he was cycling through the area during a lengthy bike ride when he noticed sections of blue paint peeling from the bottom of the pool. Curious about what he was seeing, he says he briefly touched one of the loose sections.
Shortly afterward, he was taken into custody by park police.
Hearn later told reporters that he spent several hours detained and was charged with destruction of government property. He maintains that he did nothing wrong and insists he never intended to damage anything.
“I was simply trying to understand what I was looking at,” Hearn reportedly said. “I found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Authorities have not publicly released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Problems Surface Shortly After Renovation
The Reflecting Pool renovation was completed earlier this year as part of a broader effort to improve several landmarks ahead of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.
One of the most noticeable changes was the decision to coat portions of the pool with a bright blue finish intended to enhance its appearance.
However, problems emerged almost immediately after the project was completed.
Within days, the water began developing a green tint caused by algae growth. Visitors and observers also noticed sections of paint separating from the surface beneath the water.
Maintenance crews were later seen treating the water in an attempt to control the algae problem, while reports indicated that larger areas of paint had begun peeling away from the pool floor.
Experts Point to Environmental Factors
Environmental specialists have suggested that the issues may be less about vandalism and more about the natural conditions surrounding the Reflecting Pool.
The shallow design of the pool, combined with long periods of sunlight and warm summer temperatures, creates an environment where algae can flourish rapidly.
Some experts believe the renovation materials and changes to the pool’s surface may have unintentionally accelerated the problem rather than preventing it.
As a result, many observers have questioned whether the difficulties stem from environmental conditions, construction choices, or a combination of both.
Additional Security Concerns
The situation has attracted even more attention following reports that the numbers “86 47” were discovered carved into nearby grass.
While interpretations vary, some have suggested the numbers could carry political meaning related to Trump, who is serving as the 47th president.
Authorities have not publicly linked the markings to any of the individuals arrested in connection with the pool investigation.
Nevertheless, Trump has repeatedly argued that deliberate acts of sabotage may be responsible for at least some of the damage discovered around the site.
Repairs Now Underway
Despite earlier statements suggesting the algae issue was largely under control, the president acknowledged that the condition of the pool now requires more extensive intervention.
Officials are expected to drain the pool completely so crews can assess the damage, remove peeling sections, and perform any necessary repairs before reopening the site to visitors.
The Reflecting Pool remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the nation’s capital, attracting millions of visitors every year. Whether the ongoing problems stem from vandalism, environmental challenges, construction issues, or a combination of factors, the debate surrounding the costly renovation is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
For now, investigators continue reviewing the incidents while restoration crews prepare for another round of work on one of Washington’s most iconic monuments.
