A study conducted by researchers at Cornell University, and later highlighted by CBS News, examined 193 final meal requests from death row inmates. The findings revealed a clear pattern: prisoners overwhelmingly preferred foods high in fat, sugar, and salt.
Researchers believe these familiar meals may provide emotional comfort as inmates face the reality of their final hours.
Lead researcher Brian Wansink explained that people under extreme stress often gravitate toward familiar flavors rather than gourmet options.
Instead of requesting exotic desserts or premium ice cream flavors, most inmates chose simple favorites like chocolate or vanilla, suggesting that familiar foods may help ease anxiety in difficult circumstances.
The Foods Most Frequently Requested
After reviewing hundreds of final meal requests, researchers found several foods appeared again and again.
Among the most popular choices were:
- Fried chicken, steak, and hamburgers
- French fries, mashed potatoes, and onion rings
- Ice cream—especially chocolate chip and mint chocolate chip
- Apple pie, cakes, and other desserts
- Sugary soft drinks and beverages like Kool-Aid
The study also found that inmates were far more likely to request soda than milk, reinforcing the preference for comforting, indulgent foods.
Famous Death Row Inmates and Their Final Meals
Some of America’s most well-known criminals made final meal choices that continue to attract attention years later.
John Wayne Gacy
Serial killer John Wayne Gacy Jr., often referred to as the “Killer Clown,” requested a large fast-food feast before his execution by lethal injection in 1994.
Having once managed several KFC restaurants, Gacy asked for a bucket of KFC Original Recipe chicken, 12 fried shrimp, French fries, and a pound of fresh strawberries.
