Joe Manganiello has revealed that he spent seven years fighting a mysterious health condition that pushed him to the brink and ultimately led to a life-saving amputation.
The actor, widely recognized for his roles in Magic Mike and True Blood, recently shared details of the deeply personal journey that shaped nearly a decade of his life. At 49, Manganiello says he is finally ready to tell the full story in his upcoming memoir, offering readers an intimate look at the painful experience that forever changed him.
In a heartfelt Instagram announcement, he described the book as “an untold story of survival,” explaining that his relentless search for answers took him “from death’s door, around the globe, and back through time.”
A Long Search for Answers
According to reports, Manganiello developed a complex series of autoimmune-related health problems that affected several parts of his body, including his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system. Despite consulting numerous medical specialists, doctors struggled to determine the underlying cause of his worsening condition.
With conventional treatments failing to provide answers, the actor began exploring alternative paths. His journey led him to spiritual healers, ancient rituals, forgotten family history, and a renewed connection with his own faith and spirituality as he searched for both physical healing and emotional understanding.
Reflecting on that difficult chapter, Manganiello told People that it was both the hardest and most transformative period of his life.
“It was the most brutally difficult time of my life—something I wouldn’t wish on anyone—but it also became the greatest adventure I’ve ever experienced,” he said.
He added that writing the memoir helped him see his suffering in a completely different light.
“The process of writing this book gave me perspective. I realized that everything I went through became a cocoon, allowing me to emerge as a completely different person.”
A Story of Survival
Manganiello’s memoir, Bloodlines, explores not only the physical challenges he faced but also the emotional and spiritual journey that accompanied his battle with illness. The book is currently available for pre-order and is scheduled for release on October 13.
The announcement also comes several years after a major change in his personal life. Manganiello and actress Sofia Vergara ended their marriage in 2023 after seven years together, citing irreconcilable differences. Since then, he has begun a relationship with actress Caitlin O’Connor, while Vergara publicly confirmed her romance with businessman Douglas Chabbott in late 2025.
With Bloodlines, Manganiello hopes to share a powerful story of resilience, perseverance, and personal transformation—one that reveals how years of uncertainty, pain, and searching ultimately led him toward healing and a new outlook on life.
