Fans of daytime television are mourning the loss of former actor Paul Avery and his wife, Sheila Avery, after the couple died following a devastating house fire at their New Jersey home.
According to reports, the fire erupted shortly before 1 a.m. at the couple’s residence in Blairstown, New Jersey. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and were able to pull both Paul and Sheila from the burning structure.
Despite rescue efforts and emergency medical treatment, neither survived their injuries.
Authorities said both were found unconscious and received CPR at the scene before being transported for further care. Sadly, the couple later passed away.
Beloved Soap Opera Star
Paul Avery was best known to television audiences for his role as Hughie, a bartender on the long-running soap opera All My Children. His character became a familiar presence on the show, and Avery remained associated with the series for more than a decade.
His acting career also included appearances in several notable television programs and films. He appeared in the original Superman starring Christopher Reeve and made guest appearances on television series including Three’s Company and Tales from the Darkside.
A Life Beyond Hollywood
While many knew Avery from his acting work, his life extended far beyond the entertainment industry.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he pursued a wide range of interests throughout his life. Friends remembered him as an adventurous spirit who enjoyed skydiving and aviation and who was constantly involved in new projects.
He later founded the community newspaper Ridge View Echo, remaining active in local journalism and community affairs for many years.
Longtime friend Joe Phalon paid tribute to Avery’s remarkable life, describing him as someone who never stopped pursuing new experiences.
“I always called Paul the most interesting man in the world,” Phalon said. “He was an actor, a veteran, a skydiver, a pilot, and a newspaper founder. His passing leaves a tremendous void.”
Daughter Shares Heartbreaking Tribute
The couple’s daughter, Kyle Avery, confirmed the tragic news in an emotional social media post.
She expressed her grief while honoring the deep love her parents shared with one another and with their family.
“I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning,” she wrote. “We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so.”
Her message quickly drew support from friends, neighbors, and fans who offered condolences and shared memories of the couple.
A Marriage That Lasted More Than Four Decades
Paul and Sheila Avery had been married for over 40 years.
In recent years, Paul dedicated much of his time to caring for Sheila after she suffered a stroke in 2018. Friends described his devotion as unwavering, noting how committed he remained to supporting his wife throughout her recovery and health challenges.
