A shocking incident on a popular Cornwall beach has sparked outrage after witnesses claimed a tourist fatally attacked a seagull that had stolen food from him.
The disturbing event reportedly unfolded on June 10 in St Ives, a bustling seaside town known for attracting visitors during the summer months. Families and holidaymakers were enjoying a warm afternoon along the waterfront when a routine encounter between a hungry gull and a tourist escalated into something far more alarming.
According to multiple eyewitnesses, a herring gull swooped down and grabbed a pastry from a man who was walking with his wife and child. What happened next left many onlookers stunned.
Several witnesses alleged that the man reacted by catching the bird and striking it repeatedly. The attack reportedly took place in full view of numerous adults and children gathered near the harbor.
One witness, Rosie Reynolds, who was working at a nearby boat tour stand, said she watched the incident unfold from close range. Speaking afterward, she described seeing the man seize the gull and hit it multiple times.
Reynolds later shared her account on social media, expressing anger and disbelief at what she had witnessed. She argued that while seagulls are often viewed as pests because they steal food, they are simply acting on instinct and do not understand they are causing trouble.
Providing further details, Reynolds said the bird had taken a pasty from the man before he allegedly grabbed it. She claimed the gull was unable to escape because it was being restrained while the blows were delivered.
According to her account, the bird became limp after several strikes and was then thrown to the ground. Although still alive at that point, she believed its injuries were severe.
Reynolds said she confronted the man immediately, along with other bystanders. She reportedly reminded him that harming a protected bird is against the law. She also described an emotional exchange in which she questioned whether he would react similarly if a child accidentally took something from him. The conversation quickly became heated, she said.
After the incident, Reynolds and several others moved the injured gull to a quieter location away from the crowds. They hoped the bird might recover if it was suffering from shock rather than life-threatening injuries.
For a short time, the gull appeared able to stand and move around. However, witnesses remained concerned about the seriousness of its condition, noting visible injuries to its chest. Eventually, the bird wandered away from sight, leaving its fate uncertain.
Another witness who was present during the incident described the scene as deeply upsetting. Writing on a local community forum, she claimed the man had attacked the gull in front of dozens of people, including young children.

Meanwhile, social media users began attempting to identify the individual seen in photographs shared online. Some internet users claimed the man was Jonathan “Jonny” Roberts, a pro-Palestine activist from Bradford, Yorkshire, pointing to similarities in clothing seen in various images.
However, police have not publicly named any suspect, and no criminal charges have been announced. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to avoid speculation and allow officers to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
