A Tragic Discovery

On September 4, 2024, emergency personnel were called to a freshman dormitory at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

When first responders arrived, they found Avery unresponsive in her room. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no obvious signs of injury or trauma, leaving many questions unanswered about what had happened.

According to reports, fellow cadets were the first to find Avery unconscious. The unexpected nature of her death prompted an immediate investigation as authorities worked to determine the cause and provide answers to those who loved her.

What Caused Avery Koonce’s Death?

The results of an autopsy later revealed that Avery died from complications related to pneumonia.

Medical examiners determined that a severe bacterial infection developed after a viral illness affected her respiratory system. The infection progressed into sepsis, a dangerous and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s response to infection damages its own tissues and organs.

The specific diagnosis involved a rare bacterial infection known as Paeniclostridium sordellii, which is associated with a severe toxic shock-like illness. Experts describe the bacterium as uncommon but capable of causing rapid and serious complications when it enters the bloodstream.

In Avery’s case, the bacterial infection developed after she had already been battling a viral respiratory illness. Reports indicated that she had experienced a persistent and severe cough in the days leading up to her death.

A Preventable Tragedy?

Medical experts have suggested that earlier recognition of her illness might have changed the outcome.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden noted that antibiotic treatment can often be effective against bacterial infections like the one Avery developed if the condition is identified in time. According to his assessment, the bacterial infection took advantage of a body already weakened by a viral respiratory illness.

Testing later found the bacteria in both Avery’s blood and one of her lungs, confirming the severity of the infection.

Dr. Baden explained that the combination of pneumonia and sepsis likely caused symptoms such as fever, persistent coughing, breathing difficulties, and general illness before her condition became critical.

Sadly, it appears Avery may not have realized how serious her symptoms had become, a circumstance that may have contributed to the devastating outcome.

A Life Filled With Promise

Those who knew Avery remember her as much more than a talented athlete.

Before entering the Air Force Academy, she graduated from Thrall High School in Texas, where she distinguished herself in numerous activities. Along with excelling in track and field, she participated in cheerleading, powerlifting, cross-country running, band, and academics.

Teachers, coaches, and classmates described her as hardworking, ambitious, and driven to succeed in everything she pursued.

At the Air Force Academy, Avery planned to major in biology and minor in kinesiology. Her long-term goal was to become a physical therapist who would help military pilots maintain their health and performance.

She had only recently begun her freshman year, making her loss even more heartbreaking for those who watched her work toward her future.

Honoring Avery’s Memory

A memorial service celebrating Avery’s life was held on September 12 at Tiger Stadium in her hometown of Thrall, Texas.

The impact she had on those around her was evident in the turnout. Approximately 100 fellow cadets traveled from Colorado to Texas to pay their respects and support her family during an incredibly difficult time.

Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind reflected on the loss, describing Avery as an outstanding teammate whose presence had already made a meaningful difference within her squadron, track team, and graduating class.

Although her time at the academy was brief, the connections she formed and the impression she left behind were profound.

In a statement shared through the Air Force Academy, Avery’s family expressed both their grief and their gratitude for the years they shared with her.
