Former President Barack Obama says Donald Trump presents a very different attitude toward him in private than he does in public, suggesting the president’s rhetoric changes whenever the two meet in person.
Obama made the comments during an appearance on the latest episode of the All the Smoke podcast, hosted by former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson.
Obama Describes a Different Side of Trump
During the interview, the conversation turned to Trump’s long-running criticism of Obama. Barnes noted that Trump frequently brings up the former president during speeches and interviews, prompting Obama to reflect on their interactions.
Obama previously described Trump’s repeated references to him as an “obsession,” arguing that the continued focus says more about Trump than about any political disagreement.
He then claimed that Trump’s behavior shifts noticeably when they are together in person.
According to Obama, the tone Trump uses publicly is absent during face-to-face encounters.
“If this person was standing right in front of me—which has happened a few times—he doesn’t talk like that because he knows better,” Obama said.
Social Media Creates a Different Dynamic
Obama went on to suggest that modern communication, particularly through phones and social media, encourages people to make statements they would be unlikely to say during an in-person conversation.
He argued that the distance created by digital platforms can remove the sense of accountability that naturally exists during direct interactions.
According to Obama, that separation allows some individuals to make more extreme or confrontational remarks than they otherwise would if speaking face to face.
Comments Follow Recent Public Criticism
Obama’s remarks came shortly after Trump made another series of critical comments about his predecessor during a press appearance at the G7 Summit.
While discussing the Iran nuclear agreement negotiated during Obama’s presidency, Trump used insulting language when referring to the former president.
Although Obama did not directly mention that specific remark during the podcast interview, his comments appeared to address the broader pattern of Trump’s public criticism.
A Long-Running Political Rivalry
The relationship between Barack Obama and Donald Trump has remained one of the most closely watched rivalries in modern American politics.
Trump has frequently criticized Obama’s policies and leadership throughout his political career, while Obama has generally limited his responses, choosing only occasionally to address Trump’s comments publicly.
His latest podcast appearance offered one of his more direct assessments, suggesting that Trump’s public persona differs significantly from the way he behaves during private interactions.
As the political rivalry continues to generate headlines, Obama’s remarks are likely to add another chapter to the ongoing exchange between the two former presidents.
